What:            

Poker Run/Ride Benefit celebrating the life of Robin. Participation = $15 per rider, $5 per passenger and $5 per additional hand.

When:           

Saturday, February 26, 2011. Registration: 10:00 am – 11:15 am at each starting location. Kick stands up at 11:30 am.

Where:          

There are two starting points for the ride; one in Woodbine and the other in Waycross. There will be three stops along the way. The final stop is at the Locals MC Clubhouse in Brunswick. The locations for each starting point and the final stop are below:

Why:              

The Locals MC of Brunswick and surrounding counties are a group of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts who are celebrating the life of one of their own through a benefit ride for Hospice of the Golden Isles. The staff there cared for her in her final days.

The Poker run/ride on the 26^th pays tribute to Robin, a beautiful lady who enjoyed riding with the Locals and was loved and supported by them and many others in her community.

This event is open to the public as are all of the MC charity events.

Poker hands are open to those who don’t ride, but everyone still must register by 11: 15 am. Anyone can come enjoy the festivities and make a donation at anytime.

HOSPICE SUPPORT COMES FROM ALL WALKS, AND SOME RIDES, OF LIFE

Local Motorcycle Ministry and Clubs Raise More than $1,300 for Hospice of the Golden Isles with More on the Way.

February 3, 2011—Brunswick, GA – Hospice of the Golden Isles (HGI) receives many blessings and sometimes they come from untraditional places. That’s what happened on January 15^th, when Pastor Fred Higgins, who has a special ministry for local motorcycle Riders, sponsored a benefit ride to celebrate the life of Robin, a pretty blonde in her 40’s who rode with the Locals M/C until she no longer could.

That ride, the “Rally Remembering Robin” raised more than $1,300 for Hospice of the Golden Isles, and it was only the beginning of what this devoted group of men and women are doing to “help those that lovingly cared for our loved ones,” as their flyer for the Rally said.

The staff at Hospice of the Golden Isle’s Robinson Center Inpatient facility took care of Robin during her final days.

As part of the Rally, about 15 of the group did a short ride from the Locals MC Clubhouse to Hospice of the Golden Isles. They stayed for a Q & A exchange on hospice care and outreach, and took a tour of the Robinson Center Acute Care Inpatient Facility as well as the Jolley House Residential Facility on HGI’s multi-acre wooded campus.

“Riding over to Hospice was cool, but riding out of there was meaningful,” David (Tug) Wilson, one of the Locals M/C Brothers who helped organize the Rally said. “The quiet and peace of the place was awesome; I am so glad to know all of our brothers and everyone in the community can get this kind of care when they need it.”

The Locals M/C are sponsoring an even bigger event February 26, 2011. This time it’s a Poker Run that pays tribute to Robin’s memory. Again, all proceed from this charity event will benefit Hospice of the Golden Isles.

Registration begins at 10 am and there is a starting point in Waycross and in Woodbine. The Poker Run’s finish point is at the Local MC’s clubhouse in Brunswick. Kick stands go up for the ride at 11:30. This event and all charitable events sponsored by the Local MC are open to the public. For more information, go to www.localsmc.net. HGI Welcomes Dr. John Shaner, MD as New Medical Director

November 16, 2010 – Brunswick, GA -- Hospice of the Golden Isles is proud to welcome Dr. John E. Shaner, MD to our staff as our new, full-time Medical Director. Dr. Shaner brings more than 25 years of experience as a Medical Doctor to our Hospice, as well as specific expertise relative to Hospice and Palliative care.

Dr. Shaner, previously of Zanesville, Ohio, joined HGI’s staff November 1st.  He is double board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Internal Medicine. In fact, he is the only physician in the five counties we serve with a Hospice and Palliative Medicine Certification. With the addition of Dr. Shaner to our team, HGI is also the only hospice in our service area that has a full-time Medical Director on staff. Our clinical team and patients both benefit from having hands-on access to his level of expertise on a continuous basis.

Dr. Scott Clay, MD and Dr. Abraham Cheong, MD, who have served HGI with excellence and dedication as Medical Directors on a rotating basis, will stay on as staff physicians. 

 “Dr. Shaner brings a wealth of precise clinical knowledge and experience in treating patients who need the specific type of care we deliver,” said Karen Brubaker, Executive Director of HGI.   “We’re delighted to know that with him at the helm, we can raise the bar even higher when it comes to delivering expert, compassionate care to the patients and families we serve.”

Before coming to the Golden Isles, Dr. Shaner served as the Medical Director for Hospice and Palliative Care of Genesis HealthCare System in Zanesville, Ohio. He has also served as a hospital inpatient Palliative Care consultant for the past seven years and was the President of the Medical Staff for the Genesis HealthCare System from 2007-2008. In addition, he was a partner in an Internal Medicine Practice and served as the director or as an attending physician in a variety of positions in the long term care and rehabilitation industry.

Dr. Shaner is currently a professional speaker with the Novartis Speakers Bureau and on the topics of Hypertension and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, he is a Certified Trainer with EPEC (Education in Palliative and End of Life Care -- formerly Education for Physicians in End of Life Care) and has delivered more than 40 presentations in this capacity.*

“It’s exciting to come to a new organization in an area new to me, and be able to jump right in an interdisciplinary team that is already doing really good work in Hospice medicine,” said Dr. Shaner. “My goal in the next six – 12 months is to build on what we have here and continue to serve and grow the high quality care we deliver in our five-county service area.”

Dr. Shaner’s office is adjacent to the Robinson Center (inpatient unit) at HGI’s facility on Glynco Parkway. He is rounding daily there and, as of January 1, 2011, will be seeing HGI patients in their homes, in accordance with new Medicare Guidelines regulating hospice care.

4^th Annual Lights of Love Celebrates Hope Dignity and Compassion

Lights of Love – Press Release and Event Schedule

November 16, 2010 – Brunswick, GA -- The holidays can be a difficult time for many families dealing with grief and loss, but they are also a time where the rays of hope can shine bright. Hospice of the Golden Isles brings the 4^th Annual Lights of Love to the community as a way to both recognize this sense of loss, while continuing to celebrate the joy of the season that honors hope, dignity and compassion.

On Thursday, December 2, 2010, beginning at 5:00 pm, Hospice of the Golden Isles will host a meaningful evening culminating in a spectacular lighting of our campus. The event is free and open to all members of the community of the five counties we serve (Glynn, Camden, McIntosh, Charlton and Brantley) and beyond.

The following is the schedule of events:

5:00 pm            Christmas Service of Remembering (inside the Bereavement Center)

5:30 pm            Dove Release – Provided by Doves of Distinction 

5:40 pm            Lights of Love Program featuring Holiday Music and a short, inspiring service

6:00 pm            Campus Lighting

6:00 pm            Dessert Reception

Members of the community who attend Lights of Love may also tour our campus with a staff member or trained volunteer.

Lights of Love is a wonderful occasion to honor or memorialize someone special. For each $15 donation made, a loved one’s name will be hand-written on a white dove that is placed on a symbolic dove tree in the entrance of our facility. In addition, his or her name will be listed in the Lights of Love program.
